What is elder abuse?

Elder abuse is any negligent or intentional act by the caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to eider adult. Abuse could physical, sexual or mental and can be the result of many different acts.

Are there signs of abuse and how can I recognize them?

Some signs that may indicate possible abuse are:

*Unusual bruises, pressure marks, broken bones, abrasions and burns.

* Unexplained withdrawl from normal activities, unusual depression and a sudden change in alertness.
*Bruises around the breast or genital area may indicate sexual abuse.

*Bedsores, unattended medical needs, poor hygiene and unusual weight loss.

*Strained or tense relationships, frequent arguments between the caregiver and elderly person.

What do I do if a nursing home resident has been abused?

Call the police or 9-1-1 immediately if someone you know is in immediate, life threatening danger


If the danger is not immediate relay your concerns to the long term care ombudsmen, protective services or the police.
